I've got them, and they're spreading.
A snake I got at a reptile show came home with them. I didn't see them when I bought him, but saw them soon after. I keep new snakes quaranteened anyway, but these have taken forever to get rid of, and now a few others have them too.
I used the mites spray the reptile stores sell, but conclude they are pretty worthless.
I do daily bathing and frequent spraying and cage cleaning, they are still here.
I thought of using a stronger insecticide, but don't want the snakes getting affected.
I read somewhere a flea collar cut into 1 inch pieces and placed under the substrate works.
Has anyone tried this? Is it safe?
Is there a better way?

Re: Mites!
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 6:59 PMOh, that sucks. I had that happen with a new baby I brought home once too! That was when I lived in Florida.
Provent a mite. Best (and IMHO) the only way to thoroughly get rid of them, it is safe for snakes and anything else in your home (except the mites of course!) You can order it online www.pro-products.com/miteandtemp.html
HOWEVER.....I have 1 new and one half used can of it and mites cannot survive in Alaska so I had no need for it anymore. Willing to send it to you for a small fee :)

Re: Mites!
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 10:49 PMMost certainly...Provent-A-Mite is the way to go. When I was managing a large reptile exhibit at the museum I work at, it was the only way to take care of mites and their eggs, and is very very safe on and around your reptiles. I used it around many varities of snakes, some which were very delicate.
If you have any insect eating reptiles, keep them far far away from your snake tanks though, because it will kill the insects before you can get them feed to your reptiles!

Re: Mites!
Fri, March 20, 2009 - 3:09 AMWow - I feel for you, too. I had that once when I got a new baby snake before Provent-a-Mite. On vet's orders I had to everyday switch the snake to a newly cleaned tank with all newly cleaned hides and such each day. Back and forth between two tanks for a couple weeks (with soaks inbetween) before we got ride of them. Back then none of the remedies were deemed safe for a new baby snake.
Gotta love the advances we've made in reptile care! :)
