Does anyone else kind of "gear up" for summer with their snakes? Maybe because mine all go off feed for the winter, but I tend to handle less in the winter - just taking them out about once a month to check on their weight and condition. Now that they're back eating, I'm working iwith them more. The newer guys, the two that are still very young and haven't been danced with yet, are getting the most handling. The "old guys" (experienced at the whole dance thing) are being handled more to "re-aquaint" them with us (and oftener than not, the dancer needs more work at this than the snake). I only have the 5, and was just curious how everyone else handles the seasons. :)

Thu, April 9, 2009 - 6:54 PMI guess since some of mine tend to go off feed too I leave them alone, but others are very active and we keep dancing. When we clean them out I handle them for a while to be sure, as you said they are healthy. Also we just bought two used (likenew) Boaphiles and now everyone will have one. Yeahhhhhhh!! Oh I have 10 snakes currently. So the are a lot of work.
A guy in the Herp Society I belong to wants to bred my male Leucistic Texas Rat Snake to his female. Apparently no one else around here ownes any. So Thoth will get to be a daddy~~~~~~~~~~~He just Shed and hasn't eaten yet but we will offer this week. -

Fri, April 10, 2009 - 2:30 PMI gotta say - you surely don't look like a grandma in your profile pic! I think this one is my favorite you've posted of you yet. :)
We gotta get down to Kentucky to see your group perform someday. You guys were a definite warm highlight of that Chicago show years ago - my whole group thought so.

Fri, April 10, 2009 - 2:37 PMI think my cross continental move, then a move to our new house in the middle of winter screwed everyone up since all most of “my kids” were awake when it was -40, and are just starting showing signs of brumation starting about a month ago!
But then again, I have 7 snake babies, and only dance with one right now, Autolycus, but am hoping to get my young boa (BCI) Iolaus to dance with me too. Everyone else seems too skittish, or bitey! -

Re: Just curious...
Fri, April 10, 2009 - 3:00 PMOh, that's gotta suck - all wanting to bruminate NOW? Sounds like you confused them good with the move! LOL!
Do the boas need a bit extra growing-up time to be settled enough to dance with? I've noticed this year the difference between my kings and my ball pythons. My young king is ready, while my young ball python (both about the same age) is gonna need a year or so. It's not that he's badly behaved or anything; it's just he's shy and jumpy yet. More something I feel when I hold him. I know that he needs some more time to be confident in himself and me before he's a partner in the dance. I think maybe the ball pythons grow up a bit slower than the kings, since they live quite a bit longer, maybe. -

Sun, April 12, 2009 - 1:04 PMThanks Mora you made my day! All around! I wish we could have had the vid from that show. :~{ And it was great meeting you and your group was amazing ! One of our favs.
Anyway yes my BP's are a little shy too, I find the older the better and also handling or holding them before the show kinda warms them up a little. They get more trusting the more you handle them.
