I have a really nice 4 stack high (421 www.boaphileplastics.com/421t.html ) - 4x2x11.5 foot wide Boaphile rack I bought for my move to Alaska, b/c I knew that heat and humidity would be bigger problems here than I had faced in Florida where I could use big glass cages without negatively affecting my snakes. These area great for the ball pythons, the smaller BCI, and corn snake. Even the Honduran Milk Snake seemed to like being in a level until I moved him into the larger wood cage 9though he doesn’t seem to like the larger wood cage, I think it is too dry for him, and too big).
I also have one 4 foot “Herp Enclosures” that has the same footprint people.tribe.net/altaira/b...bca7e0961c (this was my post, I returned one of the cages pictured here in favor of the 4 stack Boaphile). The quality fo this one is not as good, and hubby and I are having to do some work on it to secure (it doesn’t come with any sort of lock, just sliding glass doors) and the track that glass sits on has come unglued so I need to fix that too. It will be a great home for the Milks Snake once I ensure it is secured, especially since he is my total escape artist!
However, I feel like I need something bigger for the bigger boas. Originally I had a BIG wooden cage made to house them together, but now that I know they are different genders, I need to house them separately (no desire to breed).
Maybe I need a couple of the 6 foot Boaphiles; I rather like the ones that come with a built in hide too: www.boaphileplastics.com/big_cages.html - but holy cow are they expensive!!!!
Wonder how high I can stack these?? 2 bigs one on the bottom, and then stack 5 of the 4 footers?? Plus a stand since I hate a cage being on the floor….
What do you folks do for housing for the bigger boids (over 5 feet)??

Re: What are you housing your BIG BOIDS in??
Fri, May 15, 2009 - 2:14 PMWe have ours in these:
www.crittercondoz.com/aboutus.html
www.reptileguru.com/detail.aspx
I met the guy at a Herp show and got a couple 4' x 2' x 2' for @ 175. ea.
Great show special - these come with air vent, lighting and socket for heat emmitter (in a wire cage) built in to the cage.
I was able to contact him again recently to get 2 more at the same price ;-). He's a wholesaler, but recommend a nearby dealer and dropped them off at her place.
I like the 2' height for my Boids cuz I have room for a branch they can climb on.
They are good for snakes with moderate humidity since they can't stay wet. I have a really nice clean NZ moss i use for bedding. it can be sprayed for extra moisture. (I have my high humid snakes in glass tanks.)
My critter condos are stacked 2 high, with a glass tank on top, by you can stack 3 high I think. Any higher and you'd need a ladder maybe.
With these btw, I use a higher watt on the bottom, and lessen from there as the heat starts to tavel up. -

Re: What are you housing your BIG BOIDS in??
Fri, May 15, 2009 - 3:33 PMMost all of my snakes, large too are in teh 421D Boaphile enclosures and no problems here. Osiris is the only one in a larger enclosure and it is only taller than the boaphiles. -

I am thinking the fact that the Boaphiles I have are only 11.5 inches are what is making me feel like they are crowded. And not only do I feel like they don't have a lot of room to move around, it is hard for me to get in there to clean! But only for the bigger snakes it seems..
Although the ones that the boas are in are the 421t ( www.boaphileplastics.com/421t.html ) which is at the same size as the 421d, except that it can be divided into two sides so I had a separator in the middle instead of the large single door.
Perhaps I should be looking at getting a taller 4 footer….
Though I do like the looks of those Critter Condos! -

Re: What are you housing your BIG BOIDS in??
Fri, May 15, 2009 - 4:08 PMI was lucky to live relatively near the Critter Condo maker, but his prices were great - they were flying out of the show.
Besides the price, they are very sturdy, and having heat and light built in - all wiring in place and secured, made it really conventient.
I found I could drill a hole out the back for a low substrate heater (just a belly warmer really) in addition to the ceramic heater.

Re: What are you housing your BIG BOIDS in??
Sat, May 16, 2009 - 1:31 PMI guess it depends on what you mean by a "Big Boid".
The 11.5" x 4' x 2' Boaphiles should be large enough for a Boa up to around 8' long. The 11.5" part is not a huge problem for the snake. Remember, snakes are not very tall animals and even if you kept them in a much larger enclosure they would spend most of there time curled up in a realitivly small area. If however you are keeping some varity of tree snake you may want a taller enclosure.
I would say that part of the problem you are experiencing is with the 2 doors. It makes it harder to remove a larger snake from the enclosure and you have to reach around it to clean.
If you want a slightly taller enclosure with the same footprint. "Animal plastics" has a 15" tall enclosure for around the same price as the boaphile 421.
The animal plastics enclosure comes unassembled and is MUCH heavier than the boaphile and still has 2 doors (sliding or hinged)

Re: What are you housing your BIG BOIDS in??
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 12:06 PMFinally, all the snakes are in the snake stack! Moved Ares into the bottom level last night, after having to reglue the track that the glass sits in. Now, we just need to make a base for it all to stand on since right now getting to the bottom level to get Ares in and out is a bit odd. Still considering getting a taller cage for the bigger boas, but they do have an entire level each so this will have to do for now!
