Me and my big female snake, Joxer, that is.
Joxer, who I thought was a boy, and turned out to be a girl, is still SUPER cranky. I had a similar problem with another female snake, Ms Cleo, and ended up having to get rid of her because I was a little afraid of her, and she just couldn’t be handled by me (men on the other hand had no problem so I thought she could sense my gender, though in retrospect it was probably just my fear at the time).
I don’t have the fear problem anymore (now that I know what it feel like to be bit HARD) and I don’t have a uterus anymore so Joxer can’t be sensing gender via menses, and yet, she still strikes at everything! Rather frustrating I tell you!! And now that spring has sprung she is really hungry too and feeding is even becoming an issue. I have taken to just tossing in the food into her cage because she is so jumpy, and I HATE not feeding in strike box.
So, any ideas on what I can do? Besides just handle her, very likely get bit and hopes she calms down??

Re: Females not getting along….
Tue, May 12, 2009 - 7:09 PMwhat breed is it?
is there plenty of hides in its home???
others might have had different experiences... but for me.. all the females i have owned were the highly strung ones. I think it has smtg to do with that they are the reproducers and have to be less trusting? I dunno really. My currenty adult female is really full on, but over much time and patience she has calmed down a little, with me that is. She is still jumpy and a bit skits but I have come to accept that will always be apart of her personality, so will just have to work with it. PS) I also have to toss the food in.. and sometimes she catches in mid air!! she is unreal! lol -

Tue, May 12, 2009 - 10:49 PMI think some snakes will never truly calm down if it's not their temperament. If they've been handled and are still jumpy, it may just be them.
And yeah, my most calm snakes have been male for the most part. -

Wed, May 13, 2009 - 1:00 PMJoxer is a big BCI. Full grown and at least 5 years old. O originally got her from a rescue where they were calling her “Striker” b/c she struck at everything when she came in – however, she was underfed and hungry! By the time I got her, she had calmed down, and would happily wrap herself around me and just hang out.

One of those pictures just gave me an idea. Right now Joxer is in the Boaphiles rack, and might be feeling cramped. Ares is in the big wooden cage. I think I might switch them this weekend.
Oh, and I will fed everyone while I am at it! That always makes everyone really happy : ) -

Thu, May 14, 2009 - 2:38 PMBoaphiles racks freak me out.... I know I see them alot in the industry, but they do look small for a snake.
But i only know about aussie snakes, and they move around alot in the wild so my thought are soley based around this knowledge.
good luck miss!! :)
